“Globe workers should be treated fairly because it's the right thing to do. It's not the easy thing, but the Times needs to show it has enough character to do the right thing. …
The New York Times Company needs to realize that this is the only paper for a lot of people. It represents Boston and is our primary source of local news. The New York Times is not going to report on our kids' sports or on our neighbors' community theater groups. The Globe does that… Does New York think Bostonians will start buying the Times now, after all this? New York should think again, and think that the Times is not only destroying the lives of the Globe workers, it is eradicating one of the most historical cities in the country.... Yes, the Times now owns the Globe, but it should take care of it and nurture it, because so many people in Boston rely on it for a lot more than a few tranquil minutes with a cup of coffee.”

“The Boston Globe has always been a hometown paper…  It is fully comprehensive, making full exposure to all the components that make up a state. ....The Globe is enjoyable, interesting, and as honest and non biased as newspapers can be. I would be very saddened to see the Globe and its employees be affected by these economic times. The Globe is traditional and historical. We'd be loosing part of our heritage and soul.”

“The Times has no business in our [MA] business. …I am absolutely livid with the Times Co. and believe that The Globe should really start writing stories about it's parent.  The Times may have become one of the most disingenuous political rags of our time.”

“The Globe is a vital institution for not only the Boston area and surrounding Massachusetts towns, but also for the nation and even the world. As a recent college graduate, The Boston Globe was a constant companion during my four years at Boston University. It's coverage was consistently objective and its features were often unique, smartly written and thoroughly reported. To lose such a newspaper would diminish the wonderful diversity of news sources Americans enjoy and deserve…”

“The Boston Globe is a paper I read every morning...  I rely on it to get a once over on the latest international, national and, most importantly local news… The sports page is near and dear to my heart.  Where else can I find such excellent writing about all of our beloved local sports teams including the colleges and high schools.  Without my daily Boston Globe I would be much less well informed and miss out on many local events that I now attend.”

“The Boston Globe is a strong local media outlet that functions on its own and actually represents the people of Boston. Today, the Internet has separated us from our own neighborhoods, but the Boston Globe has done an amazing job at creating a Boston "identity" in this global Internet age.”

“…The Boston Globe just like the New York Times is one of the veins that make the city's heart beat. I believe the Boston Globe employees is what makes the company. Substantive pay cuts, and increase in health cuts will help dollar wise but not morale or motivation. In turn, I believe the newspaper will suffer and may lack inspiration. It is the writers passion that makes the story come alive. Taking from the employees is like taking the passion from the story.”

“I have warm thoughts about The Boston Globe because I was the western Mass. correspondent for 30 years. …The Globe is where I learn the intricacies of the problems that face us these days…

`I know the newspaper business is suffering from the economic recession but I am deeply disappointed that the New York Times wants to come down so hard on the very staffers The Boston Globe needs to do its work. I have seen so many Globe staffers whose work I read and respected over the years leave because of this.

I hope and pray The Boston Globe keeps on going!”

“I have read the Boston Globe nearly every day since moving to Boston 33 years ago. I love the paper and I depend on it. “I've been reading the paper since the first grade and greatly enjoy the sports section. In fact I've met many of the legends from Ray Fitzgerald to Leigh Montville to Peter Gammons... And I hope that the NYT seeks the input of all Globe employees.”

“My husband and I have been Globe subscribers for years. Our children grew up seeing their parents read The Globe in the morning. Young adults now, they read The Globe as well.

… I am also an art teacher at Weston High School, in Weston, MA. For the past 10 years, I have invited Boston Globe photographers to my photography classes to share their work and their experiences working for Globe. Stan Grossfeld, Suzanne Kreiter, Dominic Chavez, Jonathan Wiggs and Barry Chin are among the photographers who have thrilled my students with their images of Boston and beyond.

What a resource! I can't imagine a Boston without The Boston Globe.”

“The Boston Globe is a quality paper.  All Globe workers have a hand in producing this quality newspaper.  The NY Times need to put effort into increasing sales, advertising revenues rather than taking the easy way out and cut hard earned wages and benefits.  For once it would be refreshing for a company to do the right thing by their work force.”

“I would like the Globe to continue to flourish… The Unions have demonstrated time and time again their willingness to take their share of cuts to save the paper, if the paper really needed to be saved. So far the New York Times Company has been anything but forthcoming with respect to negotiating openly and in good faith… The Globe has to persist, but not at the expense of worker benefits but at the expense of corporate profits. The role of the Globe should be to inform the public and to a far lesser extent to bring profits for the New York Times Co.

Having a media to communicate, express, and investigate the current local and international events is essential for any democratic society. This should be the role of the Globe and this is why I think the Globe has a vital function to play in the area…

“I read the Boston Globe because I find in it real information that I need. I like the unbiased reporting of the Boston Globe. The investigative reporting at the Boston Globe has made Government and other public authorities more responsible when dealing with public matters…I appreciate the professionalism of the reporters and the editorial team. “I've been reading The Boston Globe since I was a child growing up in Needham…

…When major events drew us to our radios and television sets for live updates, we would then turn to the Globe for a deeper explanation of what we had just seen and heard -- the why and how -- and reactions from our neighbors as well as witnesses and experts.

And when we were old enough to vote, we felt confident we could fulfill our duty as citizens informed of the facts about the honesty of an elected official or candidate or the pros and cons of a referendum question.

It is these crucial elements in our democracy that writers and editors and photographers at The Boston Globe work around the clock, at great sacrifice, to provide us. I dare say they did not get in the newspaper business for the high pay rate…

The New York Times would do well to understand what The Boston Globe means to New Englanders before again threatening to shutter it rather than find a solution to the financial mess its management has created, through lack of foresight, without unfairly penalizing its hard-working news gatherers.”

“…The digital age began more than two decades ago. And rather than be a leader in the industry, the NYT has continued to cut and slash rather than invest and build.

Boston is one of the Top 10 markets in the United States, probably North America. It is a HUGELY influential City and region, and it is UNCONSCIONABLE that the Times CORPORATION has allowed it's properties get to this point.

To me, it seems they have neglected their responsibilities to the 4th Estate, but more importantly the Communities they have the PRIVILEGE of serving…

The New York Times has a CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY to the people of Boston and New England to do the right thing and see that the Globe survives through this technological watershed...”

“The Boston Globe has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

… As part of the Globe's Paper Route to College scholarship program, both my brother and I were able to accrue enough years to earn a $5,000 education scholarship.

Throughout high school, I read the Boston Globe religiously…I was so inspired by the Globe's writers, that I knew, one day, I'd be a sports writer myself…

… during my freshman year of college I secured a part-time job working at the Boston Globe...I met a wide variety of writers, editors, co-workers and friends, and I remember my days of working at the Globe as the best job of my life.

...  I do not know what I would do if I knew the Globe no longer existed.

The Globe is more than a newspaper. It's a place made of family and it brings families together…

Save the Globe!!”

“I wake up each morning at a time which coincides with the paper's delivery…  I scan the front page to find the good and the bad that has happened the previous day...and night…  I rise from the table better informed, often entertained and appreciative of the balanced perspectives.  In these times, especially, I scan for sales and deals to benefit my family.

My family values the sacrifices the Globe workers are being asked to make.  We are all being asked to tighten our belts and sacrifice for the greater good.  Both Management and the Unions need to be mindful of this.  Gone are the days of conspicuous consumption.  Perhaps, in the long run, we are better for it.”

“The Globe means many things to me: alerting me to issues of concern, informing me of local and international news and events, helping me understand complex international and national issues, providing me with differing interpretations of events or situations, making me think twice about my own interpretations of events or situations or behaviors of individuals or groups or nations, putting some humor into my life with the comics, allowing me to relax for a short while with puzzles, providing me with new recipes, and on and on. I love the Globe…

“I rely on the Globe for indepth and independent writing for the New England region… I was disappointed when the New York Times started a New England edition a few years ago and knew it boded ill for the Globe. If the Times hadn't encroached on the Globe's turf both papers would be in better shape now. Globe workers deserve better treatment than they have received. “For three years I was a co-op on the Living/Arts desk, surrounded by the peculiar and singularly gifted minds of the editorial staff. Strange, savvy, generous, challenging, clever, remarkable people populate that building, and their words populate that newspaper's pages; the loss of all that manic, brilliant energy would be deeply felt…

“The Boston Globe has been a major part of my life since my first birthday, over 57 years ago. At that time, my father Richard Backoff was killed in Korea on November 2, 1951, my first birthday. A few days later a picture of me holding a picture of my Dad, was on your front page. That memory is one of only a few that I have with my Dad's photograph on it…

Throughout my adult life I have lived in a lot of places, including overseas and the Globe has always been my connection to my home. I can not imagine what my life would be like without connection to the city in which I was born. I feel strongly that the people that work for The Globe need to be treated fairly. As reported in many a story, this world is becoming a more difficult place in which to survive and cutting pay, benefits and health programs does not seem like an equitable way to treat the people who so fairly report on the world news.”

“The Boston Globe is, in my opinion, a vital institution in the New England region. It's investigative reporting has made a MAJOR contribution to the cause of justice in the area. It seems unfair to me that the workers are once again asked to make sacrifices to keep the institution financially viable. Are similar (or even greater!) cuts, increases, and eliminations being expected of the management in New York? Are top executives still receiving their bonuses?”

“Every cut to the Boston Globe is a blow to the vigor of our first amendment rights, without which democracy will be in sad shape indeed. The Globe is the only media outlet that has done in-depth investigations into corruption on the state level, the decimation of state-provided services for people with disabilities, and many other important issues that could receive serious attention only from a regional paper…

“The Globe has been a central part of my life in Boston since I have lived here. It is where I go for everything from local news, to ideas for a great dinner, to a recap of last nights Sox game. I signed the petition because I can't imagine a Boston without it.

More importantly, you, the Boston Globe workers, pump the life into this paper. Without you, there would not only be no paper but no heart behind the paper. The Boston Globe has a personality, a personality that comes from the people behind the scenes who write the paper. Without you, their would be no Boston Globe, and certainly no reason to read it…

“I think the Globe is "the" paper in the greater Boston area…I feel readers get the true story, written by truly energetic writers at the start of each day.

I think its necessary that you keep the current workers employed and with the current benefits.  I understand today's financial environment and the need for companies to compromise in some areas of spending.  But, to discontinue 401(k) plans and increase heath care costs would only create an environment of discontent.  That kind of environment results in poor quality output and no willingness from the employees to go above and beyond…”

“Boston is extraordinary in large part due to two forces which work both with and against one another.

On the one hand, there is the city's amazing sense of place -- it's history, tradition, and culture.

On the other, there is the pulsing energy created by the influx and outflow of youth and ideas at the areas scores of colleges and universities.

“Yesterday's front page of the Globe was a powerful example of what we'd miss by not having this great publication. First, a powerful, well-executed analysis of GM's bankruptcy and its significance to New England. Second, a fascinating account of the bizarre Clark Rockefeller kidnapping case, told through the riveting testimony of his ex-wife. ”The Globe is a voice for this New England region, capturing its distinct accents and mix of characters which are decidedly not those of New York or any other corner of the country. It carries on New England's tradition of intellectual and cultural history, science and technology, devotion for its sports teams, and a mix of ethnic groups unlike that elsewhere in the U.S. Globe writers broke stories of major international importance: just think of the Roman Catholic Church abuse cover-up and, a generation ago, the Pentagon Papers. …I hope that Globe workers gain a new contract with the respect they have earned and deserve.”

“As a senior in Boston University's Print Journalism program, the Globe means everything to me. Since I was a kid, I have dreamed of writing for it, and now that the time comes when that might have finally been a reality, the window is closing. …The Times sees the Globe as a bunch of numbers, and doesn't see the effect it has on the city of Boston. But more than that the trouble the Globe faces seems like a sign of things to come for print journalism. I've wanted to be a reporter all my life. In a year, I most assuredly won't have a job in journalism- but after seeing the way the Times and other companies are treating print journalists, for the first time in my life, I don't think I want one.”

“…That is what is special about the newspaper itself; you turn a page and you see a story that catches your eye, surprises you, inspires you, makes you laugh, smile, cry and ponder some of the most amazing things in the world. That is something that by the pure medium itself, you just can't get in any other form.

And lastly, I must mention that as a girl my Grandmother came over on Sunday's with "The Globe," as we called it and Dunkin' Donuts. She worked at The Boston Globe in the classifieds department. I went and visited her one day and was surprised to see a woman I in a role that I didn't really recognize, someone who had a job to do, did it well and with pride. When I was older my grandmother liked to tell the story of how she went into the Boston Globe for one summer, but didn't leave until 25 years later, I guess she liked it.

She passed away a few years after retirement. And somehow I inherited her 100 Years of the Boston Globe book. I consider it sacred, as I do The Boston Globe itself.”

“I am a journalism student at the University of New Hampshire and have been reading the Globe since I was a little girl. I remember when my dad would get the Sunday paper from the end of the driveway and then I would join him while he read the news and I read the comic strips. The Globe has been a part of my childhood memories. Now that I am an adult and am graduating next year with a degree in journalism, it is vital to my future that big names like the Globe stay alive and in business. The task of producing a news article is no simple task and involves a lot of pressure, knowledge and time crunching--often times working after hours to get the story you need. The Globe is absolutely crucial to the character of the Boston region and has been essential in providing the area with breaking news, while also giving deserved and equal attention the arts, culture and sports. It is imperative that the Globe continues in its longevity and influence and therefore, it is critical that the Boston Globe workers be treated fairly by the New York Times Company.”

“My fondness for the Globe is deeply rooted in both the quality of the publication, and my family history. I personally read the Globe because of their straightforward presentation of news stories, and their respect of my occupational choice. I am a Union member, and the barrage of anti-union sentiment in competing media outlets is draining to say the least. The Globe presents their stories regarding labor issues very fairly, and does not assume that unions are the root of all the Nation's ills. From a family standpoint, my father worked at the Globe for over 30 years as an electrician, and his father did the same. My father passed away 2 years ago, before any of this started, but he was always proud of working for the Globe, and would have been sad to see it go. Along with being an institution in this city, and the amount of people it keeps employed, the Globe really has to stay.”

“I wish you much luck in getting the contract that all of you hard workers at the Globe deserve.”

“The Globe is an institution that should be supported by all Massachusetts citizens. It plays a vital role in communicating local, regional, national and international news to all who care to take the time to read it. I have grown up with the Globe and would be very concerned if we did not have such a resource. The Internet is a great tool but it is not the Globe. The professionals at the Globe just like all workers deserve a fair and equitable contract. Concessions are needed but they must and should be fair.”
