The Globe's announcement that it will close its foreign bureaus marks a sad day in the history of this newspaper. For decades, our members have taken pride in distinguished international coverage, which has placed the Globe among the most ambitious and important newspapers in the country. The decision to eliminate the Globe's foreign mission sends a clear message about the priorities of The New York Times Company, and its determination to reduce the Globe's scope and seriousness.
The elimination of our foreign coverage - arguably our most important public service - could boost profits minimally for Times company shareholders but will do a grave, lasting disservice to Boston Globe readers. We lament the New York Times Company's decision, once again to put potential profits above the global journalism that is increasingly vital to our future. The company has failed once again to deliver on its oft-stated commitment to top-quality journalism in Boston as in New York.
