"Big Show" Ban -

A second hearing was held in October on the Union's arbitration
against the Globe's unilateral banning of unit employees from participation
on the "Big Show" sports radio talk show. The arbitration is
continuing with another hearing date forthcoming.


"Staff Correspondent" Arbitration -

A new arbitration hearing is being scheduled after a September date was postponed due to a religious holiday conflict.

Contract negotiations are also ongoing in an effort to resolve the issue of "staff correspondents" doing the same work as reporters but getting half of the top scale.

Some grievances were resolved when involved unit employees accepted the Globe buyout last summer and had their discipline records removed from their employee files as a result. Other grievances either have been sent to arbitration after the company denied them or are still awaiting further meetings.

There are also ongoing efforts to settle several grievances before the scheduled arbitration dates.

The following is a list of grievances filed in the past year and their current status:

  • 2001-05 - Wrongful Discharge/Advertising - Resolved with voluntary resignation
  • 2001-06 - Snowstorm/Vacation Day - Resolved with vacation day/other arrangements
  • 2001-07 - Wrongful Discipline/Maintenance - Resolved with buyout/discipline removed
  • 2001-08 - Wrongful Discharge/Circulation - Pending further meeting
  • 2001-09 - Wrongful Suspension/Photo - Resolved with removal of suspension
  • 2001-10 - Unit Work/Inside Sales - Resolved when exempt manager ceased violation
  • 2001-11 - Unit Work/Inside Sales - Sent to arbitration/exempt performing unit duties
