Our bargaining unit includes unit employees in editorial, advertising, business, production, maintenance and security. Until 1994, we were an independent union called the Boston Globe Employees Association (BGEA). That year, BGEA members voted to affiliate with The Newspaper Guild.
Two years later, in 1996, TNG became a Sector of the 700,000-member Communications Workers of America (CWA), the nation's largest telecommunications union.
In April 2001, BGEA members voted overwhelmingly to change our name from the Boston Globe Employees Association to the Boston Newspaper Guild.
Thus, under TNG we are the Boston Newspaper Guild. Under TNG's merger with the CWA, we also became TNG-CWA Local 31245.
The Boston Newspaper Guild's governing body is the Governing Board, which consists of the seven-member Executive Committee and 21 delegates, with each delegate specifically representing a department in the bargaining unit.
The Executive Committee, which includes the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and three At Large members, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Union.
Under the bylaws, the Executive Committee is also the Negotiating Committee during contract negotiations, with the President serving as chief negotiator.
We are a member of the Guild's New England District Council, which represents all TNG locals in New England and meets at least twice a year to discuss various issues and events of interest to the locals.
We also belong to the Boston Unity Council of Unions. This body represents all the unions that represent, at the Boston Globe and other area newspapers, unit employees in editorial and advertising, and in crafts and trades such as pressmen, drivers, mailers, electricians and typographical workers.
